[0059] The present disclosure relates to devices, methods and systems for mitigating short circuits in electrolytic cells. In particular, the present disclosure relates to a device for detecting a short circuit in an electrolytic cell and for automatically electrically isolating electrodes or controlling their current flow.

[0060] Unless clearly stated or required by the context, the terms electrical contact, contact, bus bar and bus are used interchangeably and are intended to have a scope of equivalents.

[0061] Short Circuit Mitigation Devices for Electrolytic Cells

[0062] figure 1 A typical electrolytic cell 100 for electrorefining, electrowinning or electrodeposition is illustrated. Electrolytic cell 100 includes cathode busbar 102 , anode busbar 104 , conductive cathode plate 106 and conductive anode plate 108 . Plates 106 and 108 are in electrical contact with cathode bus bar 102 and anode bus bar 104 , respectively, such that bus bars 102 and 104 serve as electri...

Abstract

A short-circuit mitigation device for use in an electrolytic cell (101) is disclosed. The device comprises a switch (302) connected in parallel with a damping load (502). The switch is disposed between a contact (102) and an electrode (106) of the cell (101) to selectively provide an electrical conduction path between the contact and the electrode. The switch comprises a plurality of metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) (402) connected in parallel. The device further comprises a switch controller (306) operably associated with the switch (302) to monitor electric current (308) through the switch and to generate a toggle signal (309) to toggle the switch (302) from a conductive closed state to a non-conductive open state when the electric current exceeds a first threshold value.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to Australian Provisional Patent Application No. 2019901395, filed 24 April 2019, the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to methods and apparatus for short circuit mitigation, and in particular to methods and apparatus for short circuit mitigation in electrolytic cells. Background technique [0004] State-of-the-art electrowinning (EW) and electrolytic refining (ER) processes can operate with current efficiencies as high as 96%, but there are still many current inefficiencies. Low efficiencies are known to occur due to bypassing all reactions by substitution reactions due to short circuits between the anode and cathode that consume charge, and stray currents due to electrolyte leakage and salt bridges. Short circuits are by far the most common cause. Shorts are caused by bent electrodes, inc...
