Abstract

A device for energy consumption estimation comprises a heart rate sensor (101) for generating a heart rate value indicative of a heart rate of an individual, a heat flux sensor (103) for generating a heat flux value indicative of a heat flux flowing through a measurement region on the skin of the individual, and a processing system (102) communicatively connected to the heart rate sensor and the heat flux sensor. The processing system is configured to generate an estimate of energy consumption based on the heart rate value and the heat flux value. The use of heat flux values improves the accuracy of the estimation, particularly during low intensity exercise and rest, when neither heart rate nor acceleration values are typically unable to provide information that is sufficiently meaningful for the energy consumption estimation.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to methods and devices for estimating energy expenditure of an individual. Furthermore, the present disclosure relates to a computer program for estimating energy expenditure of an individual. Background technique [0002] The human or animal body expends energy when it is engaged in physical activity and when it is just resting. Energy expenditure is used for basal metabolism and physical activity. In many cases it is desirable to measure or estimate the energy expenditure "EE" of a human or animal body, eg to monitor daily calorie consumption. Portable devices such as, for example, smart watches have become popular tools for estimating energy consumption. These devices typically measure heart rate and motion, such as acceleration, and then calculate an estimate of energy expenditure based on these quantities. Publication US8920332 describes a wearable health monitoring device comprising a motion sensor and a photopl...
