Problems solved by technology

However, this hook has its inherent material cost and labor cost of welding it in place
Also, if the lamp is dropped, the arm 62 and hook 66 may bend, causing the arc tube 30 to come off the center of the envelope, just as the reflector of the lighting device is off center, which is especially troublesome with a parabolic reflector because It requires the light source to be at the focus of the parabola

Embodiment Construction

[0019] see figure 2 , according to the preferred embodiment of the present invention ceramic metal halide discharge lamp has a screw base 10 and a center contact 12, they are respectively connected to the first and second current input terminal 16 embedded in the glass stem 14 , 17, in the stem, they are connected to the first and second current carrying support members 18, 19 protruding from the stem 14, respectively. Components 18, 19 and prior art ( figure 1 ) are made of 0.060 inch (1.524 mm) diameter nickel wire. The glass envelope 20 sealed to the stem 14 is generally elliptical and has a dimple 24 at the closed end 22 forming a protrusion.

Abstract

An HID lamp utilizes a wire frame member (40) having an integral coil (46) with spaces between windings to relieve thermal stress and provide shock absorption in a ceramic metal halide discharge lamp (30) mounted concentrically in an elliptical-dimple (ED-type) glass envelope. The wire frame member has a first end (42) welded to a current carrying support member (18) embedded in the stem (14) and a second end (52) welded to an upper axial lead (38) of the arc tube, the coil being situated about the dimple (24). The lower axial lead (39) fixed relative to a second current carrying support member (19) embedded in the stem, so that the coil compresses when the arc tube expands relative to the wire frame member.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a high intensity discharge (HID) lamp having a ceramic metal halide arc tube with opposing axial leads connected to a current carrying support member embedded in a glass stem and relative to the stem, The glass shell has a closed end. Background technique [0002] figure 1 A prior art ceramic metal halide discharge lamp is shown having a metal base 10 and a center contact 12 welded to respective current input terminals 16, 17 embedded in a glass stem 14, in which In 14, the current input terminals 16, 17 are welded to the support members 60, 61. The upper end of the first support member 60 has a ring of holes 64 positioned near the protrusion formed by the dimple 24 of the closed end 22 of the outer shell 20, and a first axial end welded to the arc tube 30. Lateral arm 62 on lead 38 . This is known as an elliptical dimple (ED type) lamp. The second support member 61 is connected to the second axial lead 39 of the a...
