Embodiment I
[0049] Methyl benzylmethoxyacetate (Compound 3, Table I).
[0050] Add 0.7g of sodium hydride (0.023mol, 80% oil dispersion), 5mL of tetrahydrofuran and 3.7g of diphenylmethanol (0.02mol, dissolved in 20mL of tetrahydrofuran) to a 200mL round bottom flask, and the reaction mixture Reflux for 5 minutes. Then, 2.1 mL of methyl bromoacetate (0.022 mol) was added, and a precipitate formed. The solvent was removed, the resulting solid was dissolved in dichloromethane, and water was added. The organic layer was separated, followed by drying over magnesium sulfate. The resulting oil was chromatographed on a silica gel column with hexane and ethyl acetate. The obtained product was confirmed by NMR, IR and mass spectrometry.
[0051] The compounds in Table I are effective safeners of acetochlor on rice crops. The synthesis of compounds 2 and 3 is described in US Patent No. 4,964,893.
[0052] Compound No.
