[0037] A foaming device according to the invention comprising a hollow body with a screw serving as feed means for the foaming of thermoplastic expandable microspheres. The screw is 2200mm long and 205mm in diameter. The screw is divided into three sections of equal length from the inlet, each section has a different pitch, 40, 50 and 60 mm, respectively. Four scrapers are mounted on the screw, one of which has a length of 90% of the length of the inner surface of the corresponding hollow body and the other three scrapers each have a length of 25% of the length of the inner surface of the hollow body. The rotational speed of the screw was 54 rpm. Microspheres of type Expancel® 461DU have an average particle size of 12 μm as measured by bulk density, and T start =99°C, T max = 140°C, the microspheres were premixed with 15 parts by weight of silicon dioxide corresponding to 85 parts by weight of hydrophobic silica. The microsphere mixture is then sent to foaming equipment. ...

Abstract

The present invention relates to a method of preparing expanded thermoplastic microspheres, comprising charging thermally expandable microspheres into an expansion device (6) comprising rotating feeding means (8) enveloped by a hollow body, and one or more scrapers (9). The invention further relates to an expansion device for expanding thermoplastic microspheres.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a method for preparing foamed thermoplastic microspheres and a foaming device. Background technique [0002] Heat-expandable microspheres are known in the art and described in detail in US3615972, EP486080, EP566367 and EP1067151, which documents are incorporated herein by reference. In this microsphere shell, the propellant is encapsulated in a thermoplastic shell. Once heated, the propellant vaporizes creating internal pressure which, as the shell softens, results in effective foaming of the cells, typically about 2 to 5 times larger in diameter. [0003] Thermoplastic microspheres, either unexpanded or pre-expanded, can be used in a variety of applications. Examples of applications for expanded microspheres are resin-based solvents such as polyesters for dry bulbs and water-based coating systems such as pigments for wet bulbs. [0004] Full foaming of thermoplastic microspheres can lead to problems with caking in combinat...
