Problems solved by technology

Such artifacts minimize the fraction of samples that can be evaluated, can produce false staining patterns that interfere with correct diagnosis, and can render samples unreadable
Difficulties in analyzing such samples lead to increased patient anxiety, re-screening costs, diagnostic delays, and more importantly, possible misdiagnosis

Embodiment 1

[0047] Cytoplasmic division can be seen very clearly on pap smear slides processed under the conditions of detection, ie Pap staining. To test the method for reducing cytoplasmic division, 4 different pap smear samples were obtained, slides were made from the samples, fixed, allowed to dry for one day, and then a modified Pap stain was used according to the following procedure Method for staining:

[0048] Step: 1 Turn on the workbench

[0049] 2 Test cleaning steps

Abstract

A method for treating a biological sample with a Papanicolaou staining process is provided. The method comprises incorporating a detergent treatment into the staining process at any of various steps. The method has been found to advantageously reduce the number of artifacts produced during Papanicolaou staining. Also provided is a sample stained by such a process.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to methods, articles and compositions for use in staining biological samples. Background technique [0002] Medical diagnostic assays are very important screening tools for the early detection of pathological conditions. Early detection allows the identification of such conditions (disorders) at a stage when treatment success is more likely. Early treatment is also often accompanied by less invasive or less invasive treatment methods, resulting in less impact on the patient. In addition to routine screening, diagnostic tests are used in a variety of other applications, including analysis of biopsies and monitoring the effects of ongoing medical treatments. [0003] A particularly useful tool in diagnostic testing is the Papanicolau staining procedure. This process was originally developed for the staining of obstetrical samples and has resulted in a significant reduction in cervical cancer mortality. Pap staining is cu...
