Embodiment Construction

[0024] Figures 1, 2 and 3 show a preferred fiber winding system 10 according to the present invention, wherein the optical fiber 8 is drawn directly from the ingot or drawn semi-finished product in a drawing process. As shown in FIG. 1 , the main parts of the system include a screening section 12 for inspecting optical fibers, and a winding section 14 for winding optical fibers onto a fiber storage reel 15 .

[0025] As the optical fiber travels through the screening section 12 as shown in Figures 1 and 2, it is mechanically stressed by a certain amount (ie, the amount of inspection). The fiber is then wound directly onto the spool 15 in the fiber winding section 14 as shown in FIGS. 1 and 3 . Reel 15 is preferably a shipping reel that can be shipped directly to a customer, who may be a purchaser of optical fiber, and / or to a cable manufacturing plant, to be directly made into cable without rewinding to another The fiber is stored on a reel. In this way, from the moment the ...

Abstract

A method and apparatus for automatic threading and winding of optical fiber onto various components in a fiber draw system, as well as methods and apparatus for conducting online tensile screening of optical fiber at high speeds. In a preferred embodiment, the fiber is tensile tested during fiber draw and wound directly onto a shipping spool (15) to be shipped to a customer. The tensile stress can be imparted to the fiber during the draw process by feeding the fiber through a screener capstan (12), which works in conjunction with another capstan to impart the desired tensile stress to the fiber during the draw process. Another aspect is a method and apparatus (10) for threading or rethreading of a moving length of fiber through a fiber draw or fiber testing process, in which fiber is wound onto a spool, comprising activating an aspirator (16) to obtain the fiber at a first location and moving said aspirator in at least two dimensions to thereby move the fiber to a second location and thread the fiber through or onto at least one component in the fiber draw or testing process.

Description

[0001] This application is the Chinese patent application number 008179069 (PCT / US 00 / 30497), the application date is November 3, 2000, and the title is "Method and Equipment for Tensile Inspection and Optical Fiber Rethreading in the Process of Optical Fiber Drawing" A divisional application of an invention patent application. technical field [0002] The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for automatically threading and winding optical fibers onto various components in an optical fiber drawing system. The invention also relates to a method and equipment for performing high-speed optical fiber online stretching and screening and directly winding the screened optical fiber onto an optical fiber transport reel. Background technique [0003] Optical waveguide fibers (optical fibers) are well known transmission media used in optical fiber communication systems. It is known that the optical fiber drawing process is to draw the optical fiber from an optical fibe...
