[0020] Figure 1 shows a conventional single solid oxide fuel cell 10 used to form a SOFC stack. Cell 10 includes a layered anode 12 and a cathode 14 sandwiching an electrolyte 16 . The electrolyte is in contact with the cathode 14 and the first adjacent layer 18 of the anode. A thicker second anode layer 20 joins the other side of the first anode layer 18 . Anode 12 may comprise nickel and YSZ (yttria stabilized zirconia). Anode 12 was fabricated such that first anode layer 18 had approximately 60 volume percent NiO and second anode layer 20 had approximately 80 volume percent NiO. The second anode layer 20 also has greater porosity, allowing for easier transport of reactant gases.
