Problems solved by technology

Existing systems are not easily adapted for this
In addition, existing systems require special racks to be constructed to the specific size and shape of the package, which means that if the size or shape of the package should be changed by the manufacturer, the corresponding rack will need to be reconfigured

Embodiment Construction

[0038] Figures 1a and 1b are front and side views, respectively, of a revolving inventory storage device according to a first embodiment of the present invention. The apparatus broadly comprises a plurality of storage areas provided by a shelving module 20 connected at one end to a conveyor belt 22 which passes over a pair of rollers 24 . One of the rollers 24 is driven by a motor (not shown).

[0039] One of the shelf modules 20 can be in figure 2 It is shown in more detail in a, where it can be seen that it comprises five shelves 26, on each shelf an item such as a pharmaceutical package can be placed. Optional vertical dividers 28 may be provided in some or all of the shelf modules 20 to subdivide the shelves so that a large number of smaller packages can be received.

[0040] A schematic diagram of another embodiment of a shelf module 20' is shown in Figure 2b middle. In this example, the module includes two fixed shelves 26' and a series of horizontally and verticall...

Abstract

An apparatus for storing and dispensing of a plurality of items of stock (34) such as pharmaceuticals comprises a plurality of storage regions (20), e.g. shelves (26) and a dispensing station (48). The storage regions (20) are arranged to circulate around a continuous path (10) such that each storage region (10) is periodically brought into alignment with the dispensing station (48) so as to allow items to be removed from the storage region (20) at the dispensing station (48).

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a device and a method for the automatic removal and dispensing of articles, in particular pharmaceutical packages or the like in a dispensary. Background technique [0002] Automated pharmacies are well known in the art, where medicines and the like are retrieved and dispensed without any intervention. Typically such systems include a robotic arm that communicates with a database of the location of the packages on the shelf. When a specific package is received, the robot arm moves to the correct position, takes the required package and conveys it to the distribution chute. [0003] The maximum output speed of such a system is limited by the speed of motion of the robot arm and the area swept by the arm (ie the area that needs to be covered by the arm). It is clear that the output speed could be increased by providing a second or additional robot arm, but this adds significantly to cost and also complexity since they have to c...
