Embodiment Construction

[0041] The present invention will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings.

[0042] FIG. 1 discloses a system 10 of a first embodiment of the present invention for human brain temperature control. In this embodiment, the system includes a dual lumen catheter device 30 .

[0043] Fig. 2 schematically shows a system according to a second embodiment of the present invention comprising two dual lumen catheter devices 30a, 30b for introduction into each nostril of a person. Temperature regulation can be achieved more efficiently and quickly by means of two conduit arrangements.

[0044] In the drawings, the same reference numerals are used to denote corresponding parts. Also, in FIG. 2 , the corresponding parts and detailed descriptions of each catheter device are distinguished by adding letters a or b to the reference numerals. Arrows are used to indicate the direction of fluid flow in the system. However, those skilled in the art will appreciate that the...

Abstract

The system (10) for temperature control of the human brain comprises a double lumen catheter (30) introduced through the human nostril and arranged with its tip at the level of the dorsal side of the tongue. The dual lumen catheter device (30) includes a first lumen (32) and a second lumen (38) in fluid communication through a set of end openings (34). The second lumen is configured as an inflatable balloon. The temperature regulator is connected to a storage tank (20) containing a cooling fluid for regulating the temperature of the fluid. The pump circulates the fluid. Alternatively, the fluid is supplied by gravity.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to the temperature control of the human brain and in particular to the cooling of the brain. Background technique [0002] In pathological situations, the body temperature of the person or the temperature of the body part will affect the healing process and the risk of permanent damage. For example, cancer cells are sensitive to heat, and for some cancers, localized heating of the blood flow surrounding the cancerous tumor may constitute a therapeutic approach, resulting in inhibition of tumor growth, or in some cases even shrinkage of the tumor. In other cases, cooling of body parts may be important to reduce unfavorable secondary symptoms of pathological conditions, which will mainly be used in the treatment of cerebral ischemia. [0003] In a stroke, blood flow to the brain is reduced (ischemia) due to hemorrhage or blockage of a blood vessel. This condition causes permanent loss of function unless treated at an early...
