Embodiment Construction

[0018] Referring to FIG. 1, a typical prior art MRI scanner includes a superconducting electroscanning magnet 1 and a gradient coil 2 for generating a magnetic field gradient. The gradient coil 2 comprises windings of a material kept at about 20°C during operation.

[0019] During the scanning operation, the patient lies on the patient platform 4 which is then moved into the bores of the scanning magnet / gradient coils 1 and 2 . Vertical and horizontal movement of the patient platform is provided by electric motors 5 and 6, respectively.

[0020] Cooling of the gradient coils 2 is achieved by feeding a cooling fluid, such as water, to a matrix of tubes (not shown) next to the coils 2 so that heat is transferred from the coils 2 to the coolant. The coolant flow circuit is formed by the pump 7 , the second supply duct 8 , the matrix ducts in the coil 2 and the second return duct 9 .

[0021] The second coolant flow path passes through the heat exchanger 10 where heat is transfe...

Abstract

Description is a patient table may be used in conjunction with an MRI ( Magnetic Resonance Imaging) Scanner which can be effected by electricity and magnetism. This patient table has hydraulic cylinders to effect its movement, so have no use for electric motor which cause interference.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to patient platforms that require horizontal or vertical movement during treatment or examination. Such platforms may be found, for example, in scanning devices such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) devices, where it is often necessary to raise or lower the patient to an appropriate height and move into the induction field of a superconducting magnet. Background technique [0002] Existing patient platforms are moved by means of electric motors that are mechanically connected to the platform by a system such as a lead screw. Such an arrangement creates problems due to the interaction between the magnetic / electric fields associated with the motor and scanning device. In order to operate, these motors must be located in areas of low magnetic fields or be heavily shielded. [0003] Also, these motors cause electrical noise that can interfere with the scanner's electrical system. This is especially problematic if the pla...
