Embodiment approach
[0073] According to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the electric field used is an alternating electric field with a frequency ranging from about 50 KHz to about 500 KHz, preferably a frequency ranging from about 100 KHz to about 300 KHz. For ease of discussion, these types of fields are hereinafter also referred to as "TC fields", which is an abbreviation for "tumor therapy fields" because these fields fall within the biologically effective field characteristics without meaningful stimulating and thermal effects (intermediate between the high and low frequency ranges) intermediate category. These frequencies are low enough that the system behavior can be determined by the ohmic (conductive) properties of the system, but high enough not to have any stimulating effect on excitable tissue. Such a system consists of two types of components, namely, the intercellular, or intracellular fluid, or medium, and individual cells. The intercellular fluid is primarily an...
example
[0104] To demonstrate the effectiveness of an electric field having the above properties (eg, a frequency between 50 KHz and 500 KHz) in destroying tumor cells, mice bearing malignant melanoma tumors were treated with the electric field. Two pairs of isolects 230 were placed on a corresponding pair of melanomas. Only one pair was connected to the generator 210, and a 200 KHz alternating electric field (TC electric field) was applied to the tumor for 6 days. One melanoma was left untreated to allow a comparison between treated and non-treated tumors. After 6 days of treatment, pigmented melanomas were still clearly visible on the untreated side of the mice, while conversely, no tumors were seen on the treated side of the mice. The only discernible area on the skin is a marker representing the insertion site of isolects 230. The fact that the tumor on the treated side was eliminated was further confirmed by cutting and inverting the skin to expose the inner surface of the skin...
