Embodiment Construction

[0033] specific implementation

[0034] Referring to the drawings, wherein the same or similar elements are designated by the same numerals, FIG. 3 illustrates a horizontal flue gas desulfurization chamber 51 of the present invention having a porous, variable vertical cross-section, stepped absorption tray 100, so as to increase the Inner gas-liquid contact area. The trays 100 are arranged in steps from the inlet 52 of the chamber 51 towards the aerosol separator 70 near the outlet 75 .

[0035] Tray 100 provides an improved mixing zone for slurry 65 and flue gas 40 within chamber 51 . The chamber 51 comprises an area having a cross-section that is horizontal to the flow of gas and that is limited. The installation of stepped perforated trays retains the gas-slurry mixture in the contact zone. Flue gas 40 may pass upwardly through tray 100 to contact slurry 65 sprayed from slurry spray head 63 . The liquid slurry is mixed with the flue gas 40 and removed such as SO x and ...

Abstract

A stepped tray is provided for increasing the available gas-slur ry contact area in a flue gas desulfurization chamber. The tray redirects the horizontal flow upwardly through the tray for increased surface area and contact time with slurry for removing SOx or other contaminants from a fossil fuel combustion flue gas before releasing the flue gas to the atmosphere. The tray is adaptable for use in vertical tower systems as well.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to the field of industrial combustion processes, and more particularly to a novel and efficient apparatus and method for removing pollutants from combustion gases prior to release into the atmosphere. Background technique [0002] Fossil fuel combustion is employed in industrial processes for many different purposes. Coal and natural gas are commonly burned to heat steam, for example in power stations. Unfortunately, fossil burning produces several pollutants that are harmful to the environment. In particular, "acid rain" which is harmful to plants is mainly composed of sulfur and nitrogen dioxide compounds. [0003] Cognizant SO x and NO x Various combustion gas cleaning systems have been developed to remove these constituents from the flue combustion gases before they are released into the atmosphere. [0004] A flue gas desulfurization system is one such flue gas cleaning system. For a general description of th...
