Embodiment Construction

[0040] This document describes a method and apparatus for coordinating write operations of dirty data items. In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the present invention. However, it is understood that the invention may be practiced without these specific details. In other instances, well-known structures and devices are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the present invention.

[0041] Optimizing systems that use persistent storage as a medium for transfer

[0042] In systems that use persistent storage as the medium for transferring data items between nodes, the write subsystem of the database cache can be modified to give higher priority to writes that are waiting to be read or written by other nodes data items, thereby reducing the waiting time required to transmit data items from one node to another. This can be done by providin...

Abstract

The present invention provides a technique for managing caches in a system that has multiple caches, which may contain different copies of the same data item. Specifically, a technique is provided for coordinating write-to-disk operations performed on such a data item to ensure that older versions of the data item do not overwrite newer versions and to reduce post-failure writes. The amount of processing required for recovery. Methods are also provided in which a master controller is used to coordinate with multiple caches to write data items to persistent storage. Also provided is a technique for managing a checkpoint associated with a cache, where the checkpoint is used to determine where to start processing a recovery log in the event of a failure.
