Embodiment

[0061] In the examples, the PBT polymer used in all examples was Valox PBT 315 resin or PBT 195 resin available from General Electric Company ("GE"). The PET polymer used was Valox PET 962 resin from GE. The polyetherimide was Ultem PEI 1010 resin available from GE. The polycarbonate used was also Lexan PC 105 or PC 175 resin from GE. The PEEK used was Victrex P151 from Victrex. Nylon 6 was purchased from E.I. duPont de Nemours & Co. ("DuPont"). The polyacetal used was Hostaform POM C13031 from Hoescht Celanese. PTFE lubricant was from DuPont.

[0062] The microcapsules used in the examples were from Aveka, Inc. of Minnesota, USA, with a PMU shell and lubricant as an encapsulated additive. The lubricant was Gargoyle Artic SHC 226 from ExxonMobil Corp.

Embodiment A

[0063] Example A : A composition comprising 10 wt% of microcapsules in PET and PEEK as polymer matrix materials was prepared using the method of the prior art, ie, direct melt blending of microcapsules in the composition. Oil capsules were visually observed in the compounded PET pellets, some of which appeared to be elongated (degraded) by the compounding process. Additionally, capsules were seen in the PEEK molded samples.

Embodiment B

[0064] Example B : In this example, the microcapsules in an amount of 10 to 30 wt% are fed directly through the side feeder of a Werner & Pfleiderer extruder (2 holes, two screws with 2 lobs, and 9 barrels) into the PEI composition. Add PEI at the throat feeder. The process stalls when the microcapsules degrade, producing formaldehyde beyond unacceptable levels for operators staying indoors.

Abstract

In the process of the invention, a composition is made by mixing a plurality of microcapsules containing at least an additive such as lubricants, oils, fragrances, colorants, etc., with a dispersing polymeric material to form a first blend, and compounding the first blend into a base containing at least a polymeric material at a temperature of less than 370< DEG >C, whereas the resulting composition is substantially free of segregated microcapsules and heat degraded shell.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to a new process for the preparation of compositions and / or articles containing microcapsules, in particular to a process for the preparation of self-lubricating thermoplastic compositions containing lubricant microcapsules, with the improved wear resistance thus obtained . Background of the invention [0002] Microcapsules are used in a wide variety of applications. A large number of materials have been encapsulated, such as adhesives, agrochemicals, catalysts, lubricants, living cells, flavorants, spices, drugs, vitamins, etc., in both liquid and solid forms. Resin compositions for various applications have been disclosed in the prior art, self-lubricating compositions for wear-resistant applications such as sealing elements, conveyor applications, etc.; antimicrobial resin compositions for antimicrobial medicine, hygiene, household products, etc. objects, such as rubber stoppers, adhesive tapes, mouthpieces, etc. f...
