Embodiment

[0026] This example illustrates the method of preparing the primer composition of the present invention.

[0027] A 25% solution was prepared by dissolving 91.5 g of Epon 1001F epoxy (available from Hexion Specialty Chemicals, Inc. of Houston, Texas) in 274.5 g of Dowanol PM solvent (available from Dow Chemical Company of Midland, Michigan). Add 58 g of A-1170 aminosilane (available from GE Advanced Materials in South Charleston, West Virginia), stir and react with Epon 1001F epoxy at 180°F (82°C) for 2 hours to decompose all or substantially all of the amine groups react with epoxy groups. The solution was allowed to cool to room temperature. Add 9.3g water to 738g Dowanol PM and stir. The 25% epoxy / silane solution was then added to the Dowanol PM / water solution and stirred for 1 hour. Add 337.5 g of butyl cellosolve solvent (2-butoxyethanol; commercially available from the Dow Chemical Company of Midland, Michigan) and stir to make a 10% solids primer solution. 0.4 g of ...

Abstract

A primer composition includes the reaction product of (a) a polyglycidyl ether of a hydroxy-functional material; and (b) an amino polyalkoxysilane. The reaction product, when hydrolyzed, comprises at least 6 silanol groups, such as at least 8 silanol groups, such as at least 10 silanol groups, such as at least 12 silanol groups.

Description

Background of the invention [0001] 1. technical field [0001] This application relates generally to primer compositions and articles comprising the same, and in one specific non-limiting embodiment, to primer compositions particularly useful for coating onto polymeric substrates. 2. technical factors [0002] In the aviation industry, it is known to apply microwave absorbing materials to aviation glass transparencies to help protect aircraft instrumentation and pilots from potentially harmful microwave radiation entering the aircraft. In one process, a microwave radiation absorbing coating is applied to an aerospace glass transparency substrate at elevated temperature. This known process is applicable when coating glass substrates. However, more and more aircraft are equipped with polymeric transparencies instead of glass transparencies in an attempt to reduce the overall weight of the aircraft. When this known coating process at elevated temperature is applied to a p...
