Embodiment Construction
[0053] Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals represent like elements throughout the various views, Figure 1-5 An adaptive mixed gas journal bearing is shown generally at reference numeral 10 in accordance with one embodiment of the present invention. The bearing 10 includes a plurality of adaptive hybrid bearing pads 12 . Each bearing pad 12 includes a pad surface 14 adjacent a rotating rotor or shaft 16 that rotates generally in the direction of arrow 18 . In one embodiment, bearing pads 12 comprise tilt pads (tilt pads) with biased integral springs ( figure 2 ). Each bearing pad 12 also includes an axial groove 20 which serves to reduce the weight of the bearing pad 12 . The pad surface 14 of each bearing pad 12 also includes a hydrostatic recess 22 having a depth 24 and a width 26 ( Figure 5 ). For example, the hydrostatic recess 22 may have a depth of 2 to 10 times the thickness of the gas film between the bearing surface 14 and the rotor surfa...
