Embodiment Construction

[0052] figure 1 shows a container system for peritoneal dialysis fluid according to one embodiment of the present invention. The container system 10 has a first container 12 which holds a peritoneal dialysis osmotic agent solution 14 in a compartment 12a. The second container 20 contains a peritoneal dialysis buffer solution 22 in the compartment 20a. The containers 12 and 20, and specifically the compartments 12a, 20a, communicate with each other for fluid communication through an opening 18 formed in the container 12 as shown. Temporary seals 24 are also provided in the fluid transfer channels between the compartments as shown. This prevents contact or mixing between the PD osmotic agent and the PD buffer, for example until the buffer and osmotic agent have been sterilized. Another temporary seal 26 is provided in a conduit 28, which for example leads into the patient's peritoneal cavity (not shown), and which seals against peritoneal dialysis fluid flow, for example unti...

Abstract

The invention provides container systems, kits and methods for peritoneal dialysis (PD) solutions. Such a system, for example, includes a first compartment that contains a PD osmotic agent and a second compartment that contains a PD buffer agent. The compartments maintain their respective contents separately from one another for purposes of transport, storage and / or sterilization. However, the compartments are fluidly couplable, so that their respective contents can be combined with one another, e.g., following sterilization of the agents and prior to their introduction into the patient's abdomen. The invention provides, in other aspects, such systems, kits and methods that provide protective structure which inhibits breaking of a seal prior between the second compartment and an outlet ofthe system, prior to breaking of a seal between the first and second compartments.

Description

technical field [0001] This application is a continuation of U.S. Patent Application No. 11 / 340,403, entitled "Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Fluid Delivery System and Method," filed January 26, 2006, which U.S. Patent Application 11 / 340,403 is U.S. Patent Application No. 11 / 046,667, entitled "System and Method for a Dextrose-Containing Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Fluid with Neutral pH and Reduced Glucose Degradation Products," filed 2005 A continuation-in-part of the January 28, 2009 application, the teachings of which are incorporated herein by reference. [0002] The present invention relates to peritoneal dialysis (PD). Among other things, the present invention provides containers and methods for treating peritoneal dialysis fluid with reduced glucose degradation products (GDP). Background technique [0003] Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a blood detoxification therapy that utilizes the semipermeable membrane that surrounds the wall of the abdomen or peritoneal cavity. In perito...
