Problems solved by technology

[0006] Water cooled brake resistors are usually heavy and require a lot of space without any additional useful function
Furthermore, for example during active heave compensation, periodic peaks in power consumption occur, which are disadvantageous because they lead to cyclic operation of the generator
The peaks in energy consumption make the generators less efficient to operate and additionally require the ship's power supply system to be designed for larger loads

Embodiment Construction

[0040] In the following, the embodiments illustrated in the drawings are described in more detail. It should be clear that the following description is illustrative and non-limiting only. The figures are schematic illustrations only, and elements in the figures are not necessarily drawn to scale relative to each other. The illustration of functional blocks or units in the figures does not necessarily imply that these are to be implemented in a single physical unit, block, circuit, chip, etc., but that a single functional block or unit may be in several physically separate units while two or more separately described functional blocks or units may be implemented in a single physical unit.

[0041] It should be noted that a direct coupling between two blocks, units, elements etc. shown in the figures may also be implemented as an indirect coupling, ie a coupling with intervening elements. These may eg be control elements, protective elements such as fuses or circuit breakers o...

Abstract

A power supply system for an electrical drive of a marine vessel is provided. The electrical drive comprises an electric motor that is adapted to receive electric energy from a power source. The electrical drive has a first operating state in which electric energy is supplied by the power source to the electrical drive to operate the electrical drive and a second operating state in which the electric motor of the electrical drive is decelerated or braked, wherein the electrical drive generates electric energy in the second operating state. The power supply system comprises an electric energy storage device for storing generated electric energy.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to a power supply system for an electric drive of a ship and a method of operating such a power supply system. Background technique [0002] Modern vessels such as are employed in drilling operations often include a number of different electric drives. These may for example be electric propulsion systems, where the thrusters are driven by electric motors such as Azimuth thrusters. Other types of electric drives that require electrical power for operation include anchor winch drives, drives for drilling applications, and the like. Usually the electricity is generated on board and transmitted to the electric motor of the corresponding electric drive. [0003] To generate electrical energy, ships often include an on-board power station that generates the required electrical energy via diesel engines or gas turbines coupled to generators. Such a device provides the main power supply for the ship. If a power station experiences a b...
