Embodiment 1
[0015] A glass vacuum insulated vessel with a dry ice cooled condenser was initially filled with HFO-1336mzz(E). Water was then added incrementally, and the mixture temperature was recorded. The temperature of the mixture reached a minimum and then leveled off, indicating the formation of a heterogeneous azeotrope. During the measurement, the ambient pressure was 14.5 psia. The measured temperatures are shown in Table 1.

Abstract
Provided are azeotropic and azeotrope-like compositions of trans-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene (HFO-1336mzz(E)) and water. Such azeotropic and azeotrope-like compositions are useful in isolating HFO-1336mzz(E) from impurities during production. Azeotropes of the instant invention are similarly useful in final compositions, such as blowing agent, propellants, refrigerants, diluents for gaseous sterilization and the like.
Description
field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to azeotropic and azeotrope-like compositions of trans-1,1,1,4,4,4-hexafluoro-2-butene (1366mzzm or HFO-1336mzz(E)) with water. Background of the invention [0002] Conventionally, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) such as trichlorofluoromethane and dichlorodifluoromethane have been used as refrigerants, blowing agents, and diluents for gaseous sterilization. In recent years, fully halogenated chlorofluorocarbons may cause harm to the earth's ozone layer, which has aroused widespread concern. Therefore, alternatives to these materials that are safer for the stratosphere are desired. There is currently a worldwide effort to use fluorinated hydrocarbons containing fewer or no chlorine substituents. The production of HFCs, ie, compounds containing only carbon, hydrogen and fluorine, is an object of interest in order to provide environmentally desirable products that can provide alternatives to CFCs. Such compounds are known in...
