Embodiment Construction

[0021] The following description relates to the locking mechanism used to control the fuel filler cap for vehicles (for example, figure 1 A system and method for refueling a hybrid vehicle as shown in . Such as figure 2 As shown, the vehicle includes an engine system having a fuel system including a fuel tank and a fuel filler cap having a locking mechanism configured to prevent the fuel filler cap from being opened. The fuel tank may be depressurized to prevent fuel from draining from the filler tube during refueling. Therefore, the fuel cap can remain locked until the fuel tank is sufficiently depressurized. as referenced below image 3 and Figure 4 As stated, following a refueling request, the fuel tank may be vented to the fuel vapor canister, and the temperature in the fuel vapor canister may be monitored to assist in determining when the fuel tank is sufficiently depressurized to perform a refueling. For example, a predetermined temperature change in the fuel vapo...

Abstract

Methods and systems for controlling a locking mechanism on a fuel cap for refueling a vehicle are disclosed. In one example approach, a method comprises venting a fuel tank into a vapor absorbent canister in response to a request to refuel and unlocking the fuel cap in response to a predetermined temperature change in said canister.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to automotive fuel systems. Background technique [0002] To reduce emissions of fuel vapors to the atmosphere, motor vehicles conduct fuel vapors from the fuel tank into the engine. A canister is also coupled to the fuel tank to absorb fuel vapors under certain conditions when the internal combustion engine is not running. However, canisters have a limited capacity. [0003] In the case of a plug-in hybrid vehicle, the internal combustion engine is inoperable for an extended period of time. In such systems, the fuel tank may be sealed and at relatively high pressure. An automatic lock of the fuel cap is provided. Prior to refueling, the fuel tank is vented through the canister in response to the operator pressing a dashboard button to reduce fuel tank pressure. The fuel cap is unlocked when the fuel tank pressure sensor indicates that the fuel tank pressure has dropped to a predetermined level. Contents of the inve...
