Embodiment 1
[0022] Embodiment 1: preparation of chemical dispersant
[0023] Table 1
[0024] Material
[0025] The materials listed above are combined to form the chemical dispersants used in the methods described herein. COLLOID 102 is an ammonium polyacrylate commercially available from Kemira (Atlanta, GA). AMP-95 is 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol and 2-methylamino-2-methyl-1-propanol commercially available from Angus (Buffalo Grove, IL).
Embodiment 2-5
[0026] Embodiment 2-5: dispersion slurry preparation
[0027] Table 2
[0028]
[0029]
[0030] Water washed (Examples 2-4) and air floated (Example 5) kaolinite slurries were prepared. Coarse kaolin clay was mixed with water and the chemical dispersant provided in Example 1 to create a dispersed slurry. Sand and other large non-clay particles are removed from the dispersed mud and the dispersed mud is then chemically bleached using sulfuric acid and sodium dithionite. The resulting dispersed slurry is then filtered to produce a filter cake. The properties of the filter cake and spray-dried slurry are provided in Table 2.
