Abstract

A vehicle includes a powertrain having an engine and at least one controller. The controller is programmed to selectively heat at least one of a plurality of components of the powertrain with a given amount of waste heat based on an expected decrease in friction power associated with an expected increase in temperature from the given amount of waste heat for each of the components.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to heating systems for selectively heating powertrain components. Background technique [0002] A motor vehicle includes various powertrain components such as an engine and a transmission for propelling the vehicle during operation. Powertrain components have an optimum operating temperature range within which they operate efficiently. Typically, at initial start-up of the vehicle, drivetrain components are cold and have temperatures below an optimal range. Cold drivetrain components increase losses compared to warm drivetrain components. During vehicle operation, the temperature of drivetrain components increases. However, depending on ambient temperature conditions, the drivetrain can remain cold for at least a few minutes. During warm-up, the fuel efficiency of the vehicle is reduced compared to normal driving conditions. Contents of the invention [0003] In one embodiment, a vehicle includes a powertrain havin...
