[0038] There are many techniques that rely on measuring the diffusion of light to characterize blood flow. These techniques include diffusion correlation spectroscopy (DCS) and diffuse spot contrast analysis (DSCA). Both DCS and DSCA can be used to measure relative and / or absolute blood flow. Other techniques rely on measuring the diffusion of light to detect other characteristics of the tissue, such as biochemical composition, concentration of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin, and the like. Such techniques include diffuse spectroscopy (DOS), diffuse optical tomography (DOT), and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS).

[0039] As used herein, "diffuse light sensor" includes any sensor configured to characterize the properties of blood in tissue via the measurement of diffuse light. Thus, diffuse light sensors include DCS, DSCA, DOS, DOT and NIRS sensors. As used herein, the term "diffuse optical flow sensor" includes any sensor configured to characterize blood flow in tis...

Abstract

Diffuse optical flow (DOF) sensors can be used to assess flow in deep tissue. A DOF sensor located on the foot can provide fluctuating light intensity data to an analyzer, which can then determine absolute and / or relative blood flow. The determined absolute and / or relative blood flow can be signaled to an operator, such as a doctor, for use in surgery. DOF sensors can be used to assess foot vascular regeneration, for example to guide interventional procedures and evaluate their efficacy. The support structure may carry multiple DOF sensors such that when the support structure is placed on the patient's foot, the DOF sensors are positioned adjacent to different locations on the foot. The different locations may correspond to different topological regions of the foot, such as different foot vascular regions.

Description

[0001] Cross-references to related applications [0002] This application claims priority to US Application No. 13 / 967298, filed August 14, 2013, and US Provisional Application No. 61 / 830499, filed June 3, 2013. These applications are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety. technical field [0003] The present disclosure relates to the measurement of blood flow in tissue, particularly in the foot. Background technique [0004] Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a progressive condition in which narrowed or blocked arteries reduce blood flow to the extremities. PAD may arise from atherosclerosis, an inflammatory process leading to stenosis, embolism or thrombosis, and is associated with smoking, diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension. If left untreated, PAD can lead to critical limb ischemia (CLI), in which blood flow to extremities (usually legs and feet) is degraded to such an extent that tissue damage ensues, followed by ulceration, gangrene, or loss of a l...
