Abstract

Provided is a composition that has a liquid crystal phase over a wide temperature range, little viscosity, excellent solubility at low temperatures, and high specific resistance and voltage retention, and is also heat- and light-stable. Using this composition also provides, at a high yield, an IPS, TN or other type of liquid crystal display element that has superior display quality and that is less susceptible to display defects such as burn-in and drip marks. Provided is a composition containing a compound represented by general formula (i), two or more compounds represented by general formula (M-3), and a compound represented by formula (L-1-1.3). Also provided is a liquid crystal display element using the same.
