Abstract

A method for compact external grating PBS / PBC coupling is described according to an embodiment of the present invention. In one embodiment, a YVO4 crystal (103) is used to split the beam or combine multiple beams into a single beam. The lens (102) is used to convert the mode of the light to match the mode of the grating port (105). A glass wedge (104) is designed to bend the light from a horizontal to a near vertical orientation to match the exit angle of the grating port (105). When the source (101) or receiver utilizes an optical fiber (1007), the fiber holder (1006) can be used to bond the optical fiber (1007) to the source (101) or receiver. The described PBS / PBC has less insertion loss than the existing 2D grating coupler technology and has a wider spectral bandwidth due to the flexibility of mode matching than the existing 2D grating coupler technology. The PBS / PBC described here also has a better polarization extinction ratio than existing 2D grating couplers, and the horizontal coupling configuration enables a thinner and more compact design than the near-vertical coupling used in 2D grating coupling.
