Abstract

A method relates to light based positioning is provided. The method comprises: responsive to receiving a light signal from at least one light source (200) available to the device (100), decoding a beacon from the received light signal, the beacon associated with the at least one light source (200); measuring signal strength of the received light signal; and determining a position of the device (100) at least in part based on the decoded beacon, the measured signal strength, and number of the at least one light source (200). In addition, the frequency channelization and random channel hopping may be utilized to further improve the performance.

Description

Background technique [0001] Location-based services have been applied in various scenarios for which accurate positioning is a key issue. Satellite-based positioning services such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Galileo system can provide accurate positioning of target objects in outdoor environments. However, such satellite-based solutions cannot be applied to indoor positioning, as is known. As an example, GPS loses most of its power when passing through building materials and suffers from multipath propagation effects, which make it unsuitable for indoor environments. [0002] Utilizing existing WiFi or Bluetooth wireless communication infrastructure to provide indoor positioning services has been proposed. While WiFi-based positioning solutions can be deployed and used at relatively low cost, they only provide accuracy up to a few meters due to wireless channel dynamics, fading, interference, and environmental noise. For example, complex indoor environmen...
