Problems solved by technology

[0006] Not only is the method laborious, but the durability of the clear coat, especially on the wheel surface, has not kept up with rising consumer expectations
The costs associated with maintaining and operating the application equipment used to apply the conversion coating are becoming increasingly high while not providing the required durability

Embodiment Construction

[0018] The method of coating aluminum wheels of the present invention provides an improvement over the prior art while increasing the durability of the wheel. Refer below figure 1 , the cross-section of the aluminum wheel is generally indicated by reference numeral 10 . The wheel 10 is formed by conventional forming methods and includes a wheel machined face 12 to form a "bright machined" surface. Additional machine operations to form the lug holes 13 and stem holes 15 are also included but are not within the scope of the present invention. The wheel 10 defines a wheel axis a about which the wheel rotates, as known to those skilled in the art. The wheel 10 also comprises a three-dimensional configuration with concave surfaces 14 defining the sides of the spokes and the visible part of the rim 17 . The edge 19 is arranged between the machined face 12 and the concave surface 14 .

Abstract

An alloy wheel is formed having a three dimensional configuration defining a face and recessed surfaces. The face of the wheel is machined providing a smooth surface at the face and defining an edge between the smooth surface of the face and the recessed surfaces. A nozzle element for projecting a plasma jet toward the wheel is provided. The plasma jet is projected toward the smooth surface of the face, the edge, and toward at least a portion of the recessed surfaces forming an alloy oxide at least on the face and the edge disposed between the face and the recessed surfaces. A first polymeric coating is applied over the face, the recessed surfaces and the edge disposed between the face and the recessed surfaces.

Description

[0001] prior application [0002] This application claims priority to US Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 077447 (filed November 10, 2014). technical field [0003] The present application generally relates to methods of applying coatings to cast alloy wheels for increased durability. More specifically, the present application relates to a method of plasma treating a cast alloy wheel as part of a coating method for enhanced durability. Background technique [0004] Improving the durability of exterior automotive components is an ongoing effort. In particular, it is known that trimming or other wear of the exterior coating of a metal substrate will lead to accelerated failure of the oxidation protection coating, which manifests itself as white rust on aluminum alloy parts. This is especially true for aluminum wheels, which require extensive treatment in order to provide a surface that is aesthetically pleasing and resistant to grooming and rust. To date, none of the t...
