[0018] The method of coating aluminum wheels of the present invention provides an improvement over the prior art while increasing the durability of the wheel. Refer below figure 1 , the cross-section of the aluminum wheel is generally indicated by reference numeral 10 . The wheel 10 is formed by conventional forming methods and includes a wheel machined face 12 to form a "bright machined" surface. Additional machine operations to form the lug holes 13 and stem holes 15 are also included but are not within the scope of the present invention. The wheel 10 defines a wheel axis a about which the wheel rotates, as known to those skilled in the art. The wheel 10 also comprises a three-dimensional configuration with concave surfaces 14 defining the sides of the spokes and the visible part of the rim 17 . The edge 19 is arranged between the machined face 12 and the concave surface 14 .

Abstract

The alloy wheel is formed with a three-dimensional configuration defining a face and a concave surface. The face of the alloy wheel is machined to provide a smooth surface on the face and to define an edge between the smooth surface and the concave surface of the face. A nozzle element is also provided for projecting the plasma jet towards the alloy wheel. a plasma jet is projected toward the smooth surface of the face, toward the edge, and toward at least a portion of the concave surface, thereby forming an alloy oxide at least on the face and on an edge formed between the face and the concave surface . A first polymer coating is applied to the face, the concave surface, and the edge between the face and the concave surface.
