Abstract

The present invention addresses the problem of providing a liquid crystal display element which has excellent display quality and is not susceptible to the occurrence of display failure with high yield by means of providing a composition which has a positive [Delta]epsilon and a liquid phase over a wide temperature range, while exhibiting excellent viscosity, solubility at low temperatures, specific resistance, voltage holding ratio and stability. The present invention provides a composition which contains one or more compounds represented by general formula (i) and one or more compounds represented by general formula (ii), with the content of the compounds represented by general formula (ii) being 20-90% by mass. The present invention also provides a liquid crystal display element which uses this composition and an IPS element and an FFS element, each of which uses this composition.
