A compact radio frequency quadrupole "RFQ" accelerator for accelerating charged particles, the RFQ accelerator comprising: a beamforming section configured to have a narrow radio frequency "rf" acceptance such that only incident on the beamforming section is captured A part of the particle beam, and wherein the converging part constricts a part of the particle beam; an accelerating part for accelerating the converging part of the particle beam to an output energy; and means for supplying radio frequency power.
