Means and method for guiding ions in a mass spectrometer

A multipole ion guide capable of incorporating a plurality of ion sources (i.e., MALDI, ESI, EI / CI, etc.) to provide and analyze ions in a mass analyzer (i.e., ICR, TOF, quadrupole, etc.) has been designed. Such multipole ion guides comprise an array of pairs of parallel conducting rods (i.e., 3 pair, 4 pair, 5 pair, etc.), each pair being equally spaced from one another, with the array being bound on its top and bottom as well as its ends by DC electrodes. The ion guide then utilizes RF / DC potentials to accept ions from any of a multitude of ion sources to facilitate their transmission through differentially pumped regions to a high pressure mass analysis region.

Apparatus and method for analyzing samples in a dual ion trap mass spectrometer

The present invention is an improved apparatus and method for mass spectrometry using a dual ion trapping system. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, three "linear" multipoles are combined to create a dual linear ion trap system for trapping, analyzing, fragmenting and transmitting parent and fragment ions to a mass analyzer-preferably a TOF mass analyzer. The dual ion trap according to the present invention includes two linear ion traps, one positioned before an analytic quadrupole and one after the analytic multipole. Both linear ion traps are multipoles composed of any desired number of rods-i.e. the traps are quadrupoles, pentapoles, hexapoles, octapoles, etc. Such arrangement enables one to maintain a high "duty cycle" while avoiding "memory effects" and also reduces the power consumed in operating the analyzing quadrupole.

Method and apparatus for LWD shear velocity measurement

Array quadrupole data obtained in a LWD environment are processed to determine the shear velocity of an earth formation taking into account dispersion effects caused by the logging tool. When this processing is done in an azimuthally anisotropic formation, the shear velocity that is obtained is the slow shear velocity. When 4C (cross-dipole) data are also obtained, then both the fast and slow shear velocities of an azimuthally anisotropic formation can be obtained.

Utilizing gas flows in mass spectrometers

The invention relates to ions guided by gas flows in mass spectrometers, particularly in RF multipole systems, and to RF quadrupole mass filters and their operation with gas flows in tandem mass spectrometers. The invention provides a tandem mass spectrometer in which the RF quadrupole mass filter is operated at vacuum pressures in the medium vacuum pressure regime, utilizing a gas flow to drive the ions are through the mass filter. Vacuum pressures between 0.5 to 10 pascal are maintained in the mass filter. The mass filter may be enclosed by a narrow enclosure to guide the gas flow. The quadrupole mass filter may be followed by an RF multipole system, operated at the same vacuum pressure, serving as fragmentation cell to fragment the selected parent ions. The fragmentation cell may be enclosed by the same enclosure which already encloses the mass filter, so the ions may be driven by the same gas flow at the same vacuum pressure, greatly simplifying the required vacuum pumping system in tandem mass spectrometers. There are many other applications utilizing gas flows including supersonic gas jets in mass spectrometry.

Radio frequency atomic magnetometer

An atomic magnetometer is used to detect radio frequency magnetic fields, such as those generated in nuclear resonance experiments. The magnetometer is based on nonlinear magneto-optical rotation and pumps an atomic vapor into a quadrupole aligned state. Detection of the modulation of the polarization of a linearly polarized beam provides the radio frequency signal, which can then be processed to extract the component frequencies.

Quadrupole mass spectrometer

Disclosed is a quadrupole mass spectrometer, which is capable of, during an SIM measurement, maximally reducing a settling time-period necessary for an operation of changing an input voltage to a quadrupole mass filter in a staircase pattern, and preventing unwanted ions from excessively entering a detector during a course of changing between a plurality of mass values. Under a condition that a response speed of a DC voltage U to be applied to quadrupole electrodes is less than that of an amplitude of a high-frequency voltage V, a control section 10 is operable to rearrange the mass values in descending order of mass value, and an optimal settling-time calculation sub-section 101 is operable to determine a settling time-period for each of the mass values, based on a mass-value difference and a post-change mass value.

Nanoprisms and method of making them

The invention is a novel photo-induced method for converting large quantities of silver nanospheres into nanoprisms, the nanoprisms formed by this method and applications in which the nanoprisms are useful. Significantly, this light driven process results in a colloid with a unique set of optical properties that directly relate to the nanoprism shape of the particles. Theoretical calculations coupled with experimental observations allow for the assignment of the nanoprism plasmon bands and the first identification of two distinct quadrupole plasmon resonances for a nanoparticle. Finally, unlike the spherical particles from which they derive and which Rayleigh light scatter in the blue, these nanoprisms exhibit scattering in the red, permitting multicolor diagnostic labels based not only on nanoparticle composition and size but also on shape.

Mass spectrometry system for continuous control of environment

A mass spectrometry system for continuous control of environment based on the use of an aerosol TOF MS that provides operation with a high duty cycle of up to 98% and can be realized in the form of a mobile unit having a data acquisition and analysis system with three levels of data correlation on the basis of constant interaction between various actuating mechanisms of the system via a central processing unit. The TOF MS is based on the use of quadrupole lenses with angular gradient of the electrostatic field. On the entrance side, the TOF MS contains an ion-optic system that is used for focusing, aligning, and time-modulating the ionized flow of particles and a deflector modulator that provides alternating deflections of the flow of particles between two positions for aligning the flow with two inlet openings into the TOF MS. As a result, two independently analyzed discrete flows of particles pass through the ion mass separation chamber of the TOF MS without interference with each other. The charged particles fly in direct and return paths along helical trajectories which extend the length of the flight time. The time of the collision and the magnitude of the collision pulse will contain information about the M / Z ratio for the particles being registered. Multiplication of a single flow of particles into a plurality of independent and spatially separated flows propagating in one chamber increases efficiency of the TOF MS and makes it possible to use it in continuous and high-duty applications with the duty cycle as high as 98%, which is unattainable with any known device of this class. The system can be mounted either on an underwater and ground vehicle, or on an aircraft.
