Mass spectrometry with multipole ion guides

Multipole ion guides configured with one or mote segments and positioned in a higher pressure vacuum region, are operated in mass to charge selection and ion fragmentation modes. Individual multipole ion guides are mounted in a linear assembly with no electrodes configured in between each multipole ion guide. At least a portion of each multipole ion guide mounted in a linear assembly resides in a vacuum region with higher background pressure. At least one ion guide can be configured to extend continuously from one vacuum stage into another. Individual sets of RF, + / − DC and secular frequency voltage supplies provide potentials to the rods of each multipole ion guide allowing the operation of ion transmission, ion trapping, mass to charge selection and ion fragmentation functions independently in each ion guide. The presence of higher background pressure along a portion of the multiple ion guide linear assembly allows the Collisional Induced Dissociation (CID) fragmentation of ions by axially accelerating ions from one multipole ion guide to an adjacent ion guide, analogous to a triple quadrupole function. A variety of MS and MS / MSn analysis functions can be achieved with a mass analyzer configured with multiple ion guide linear assembly operated in a higher background pressure.

Ion trap

An ion trap comprises substantially elongate electrodes 10, 20 some of which are curved along their axis of elongation and which define a trapping volume between them. The sectional area of this trapping volume towards the extremities of the trap in the direction of elongation is different to the sectional area away from its extremities (eg towards the middle of the trap). In a preferred embodiment, the trap has a plurality of elongate electrodes, wherein opposed electrodes have different radii of curvature so that the trap splays towards its extremities. Method and apparatus for identification of samples

A multi reflection time of flight (MRTOF) mass spectrometer (12) And method for identifying a sample is disclosed. Sample ions are generated at an ion source (15). The MRTOF is a closed mirror arrangement with first and second opposed ion mirrors (20, 20′) on an axis of reflection (XX′). The MRTOF (12) also includes a bidirectional ion deflector (50) on that axis (XX′). The deflector (50) deflects ions onto the reflection axis as a short pulse at time to <zero> where they oscillate multiple times, separating in time of flight according to ion m / z. At a later time t, ions travelling in both directions along the axis (XX′) are ejected out of the MRTOF (12) by the bidirectional deflector (50) to an ion detector arrangement (55). The separation of ions in time of flight allows a “fingerprint” of a biological sample to be produced by the detector arrangement (55) without the need to assign a mass to each peak. Comparison with a library of fingerprints permits identification.

Ion trap mass spectrometer

The number of times of repetition of mass spectrometry analysis for integrating mass profiles is reduced to facilitate reduction in measurement time-period and increase a signal intensity. In a state when ions are trapped by a high-frequency electric field formed within an ion trap, a rectangular-wave high-frequency voltage to be applied from a main voltage generation section to a ring electrode is temporarily stopped, and next ions are introduced from an ion entrance port into the ion trap in a state when only a static electric field exists within the ion trap. The high-frequency voltage application is re-started while at least a part of previously-trapped ions remain within the ion trap, to trap the newly-introduced ions in addition to the previous ions so as to increase an amount of ions to be accumulated, and the accumulated ions are subjected to the mass spectrometry analysis.

Time of flight mass spectrometer

A time of flight mass spectrometer according to the present invention includes: a) an ion source at which an ion starts flying; b) an energizer for giving a predetermined amount of energy to the ion to let the ion start flying from the ion source; c) an ion guide for forming a time-focusing flight path on which the ion flies once or repeatedly; d) a detector for detecting the ion after flying the flight path; e) an analysis controller for giving different amounts of energy to ions of the same kind using the energizer, and for measuring the values of the flight time of the ions from the ion source to the detector for the amount of energy; and f) a mass calculator for calculating or estimating the mass to charge ratio of the ion based on the difference in the values of the flight time of the ions. Since the flight time of ions on the time-focusing flight path does not depend on their kinetic energy, the difference in the flight time of an ion having two different amounts of energy gives the estimation of the mass to charge ratio of the ion. Thus, a mass spectrometry of an ion for a wide range of mass to charge ratio can be made by simply performing two measurements on the same sample. This greatly reduces the time and labor of mass analysis, and a wide range of mass spectrum can be obtained on a scarce sample on which many-time measurements are impossible.
