Particle beam irradiation system and method of adjusting irradiation apparatus

The present invention provides an increased degree of uniformity of radiation dose distribution for the interior of a diseased part. A particle beam therapy system includes a charged particle beam generation apparatus and an irradiation apparatus. An ion beam is generated by the charged particle beam generation apparatus. The irradiation apparatus exposes a diseased part to the generated ion beam. A scattering device, a range adjustment device, and a Bragg peak spreading device are installed upstream of a first scanning magnet and a second scanning magnet. The scattering device and the range adjustment device are combined together and moved along a beam axis, whereas the Bragg peak spreading device is moved independently along the beam axis. The scattering device moves to adjust the degree of ion beam scattering. The range adjustment device moves to adjust ion beam scatter changes caused by an absorber thickness adjustment. The Bragg peak spreading device moves to adjust ion beam scatter changes arising out of an SOBP device. These adjustments provide uniformity of radiation dose distribution for the diseased part.

Radiation treatment plan making system and method

A radiation exposure region to be irradiated with particle beams and a peripheral region thereof are respectively divided into pluralities of exposure regions, radiation treatment simulation for applying particle beams according to the shape of each divided exposure region is performed, and a radiation treatment condition is obtained for causing the flatness of the radiation exposure region to be in a desired range, and a dose of particle beams applied to the unit exposure region of the peripheral region to be minimum. Thus, the problem of low efficiency of radiation is solved.

Charged particle beam irradiation system and charged particle beam extraction method

A charged particle beam irradiation system and a charged particle beam extraction method which can prevent erroneous irradiation of a charged particle beam in the direction of advance of the charged particle beam. The system and method are featured in stopping supply of an ion beam to one or more of a plurality of angle zones in each of which a target dose is attained, the angle zones being formed by dividing an RMW in a rotating direction thereof, and in allowing the supply of the ion beam to one or more other angle zones in each of which a target dose is not yet attained. The invention can easily adjust beam doses at various positions in an affected part of the patient body in the direction of advance of the ion beam, and can greatly reduce the probability of erroneous irradiation that the beam dose becomes excessive or deficient at the various positions within the affected part of the patient body in the direction of advance of the ion beam.

Particle beam irradiation system

A particle beam irradiation system which can increase an availability factor. An ion beam extracted from one proton beam linac is bent at 90 degrees by a switching magnet and is introduced to RI production equipment through a beam line. In the RI production equipment, a RI is produced using the introduced ion beam. An ion beam extracted from the other proton beam linac is bent at 90 degrees by the switching magnet and is introduced to a synchrotron through a beam line. The ion beam extracted from the synchrotron is irradiated to a patient from irradiation equipment. If one proton beam linac comes into an abnormal state, the one proton beam linac is stopped in operation and checked. During the check, the ion beam extracted from the other proton beam linac is selectively introduced to the RI production equipment and the synchrotron by the switching magnet.

Method and apparatus coordinating synchrotron acceleration periods with patient respiration periods

The invention relates generally to treatment of solid cancers. More particularly, the invention relates to enhancing synchrotron acceleration cycle usage efficiency by adjusting the synchrotron's acceleration cycle to correlate with a patient's respiration rate where efficiency refers to the duty cycle or the percentage of acceleration cycles used to deliver charged particles to the tumor. The system senses patient respiration and controls timing of negative ion beam formation, injection of charged particles into a synchrotron, acceleration of the charged particles, and extraction to yield delivery of the particles to the tumor at a predetermine period of the patient's respiration cycle. Independent control of charged particle energy and intensity is maintained during the timed irradiation therapy. Multi-field irradiation ensures efficient delivery of Bragg peak energy to the tumor while spreading ingress energy about the tumor.

Thermally powered terahertz radiation source using photonic crystals

Although THz radiation is naturally emitted by hot objects, the intensity levels are too weak to be considered as a practical THz source for most applications. Photonic crystal structures are used to modify the thermal emission peak associated with the standard Planck blackbody spectral distribution so that the THz region is dramatically enhanced. The photonic crystal core is preferably combined with variable Q defect cavities and a wave guiding and power combining structure so that the radiated THz energy is efficiently collected and directed to an output antenna. Higher THz emissions are realized by embedding a finer (higher frequency) photonic crystal structure within a coarser (lower frequency) structure.

Circular accelerator

In a circular accelerator, a magnetic pole edge portion of a bending electromagnet into and from which a charged particle beam enters and exits is provided with endpacks. A first protrusion is provided at that part of each end pack which is radially outside the equilibrium orbit of a center energy beam, while a second protrusion is provided at that part of each end pack which is radially inside the equilibrium orbit of the center energy beam. The shapes of the first and second protrusions are set so that the betatron oscillation numbers of beams of different acceleration energies may be held constant or become linear to the energies. In case of emitting the charged particle beam out of the circular accelerator, the change of a tune attributed to the change of the beam orbit can be statically corrected, the tune is linearly changed, and an adjustment of the emission of the beam becomes easy.
