Problems solved by technology

This can cause undesired heating of other components and / or under-curing of the heat-curable material
Additionally, the various heated components can operate as heat sinks requiring additional thermal energy, thereby increasing overall process time, energy, and reducing process efficiency compared to direct heating of thermally curable materials as described herein
On the other hand, components with poor heat transfer characteristics can act as a heat transfer barrier and block heat transfer to the heat curable material
[0004] Also, heating other components may not be desirable in some cases

[0098] Figure 5A is an example of a curing system 300 including a heating rod 310 , a first support 320 and a second support 330 . The first support 320 is engaged with the package 312 of the heating rod 310 . The second support 330 is also engaged with the encapsulation 312 of the heating rod 310 . The second support 330 is movable between the first end 312a and the second end 312b of the enclosure 312 while continuing to engage the enclosure 312 of the heating rod 310, for example as Figure 5B and Figure 5C schematically shown. In some embodiments, both the first support 320 and the second support 330 are movable. This movement can be used to seal the first component 210 and, in some embodiments, to compress the first component 210 against the second component 220, for example. The compressive force 218 may be generated by mechanical means, pneumatic means, hydraulic means, or the like. For example, the second support 330 may include a nut 332 threadably coupled to ...

Abstract

A method and system are provided for curing materials within chambers for thermally curing various materials, such as thermally curable materials or more particularly potting mixtures, provided in a chamber having restricted access to the materials cavity. In some embodiments, the thermally curable material disposed within the cavity may be heated by a heating rod extending into or through the cavity. A heating rod is thermally coupled to the heat-curable material and used to transfer heat to the heat-curable material. For example, a heating rod may comprise a resistive heating element. The heating element may be positioned so as to selectively heat the thermally curable material within the cavity without significantly heating surrounding components. In some embodiments, the heating rod may also be used to compress the cavity-containing component or stack including the component.

Description

technical field [0001] The present application relates to a method and system for curing material within a cavity. Background technique [0002] Curing heat-curable materials disposed within cavities, such as potting compounds within aerospace panels, can be challenging. The curing process typically involves heating of various surrounding components and / or disassembly and subsequent reassembly of components. For example, a thermally curable material may be disposed within a cavity of an inner component stacked between two outer components. To cure the thermally curable material, an external heater, such as a heat blanket, may be used to heat at least one of the external components. This method relies on heat transfer through the external component to the heat curable material. Also, it is not necessary to heat the external components. Typically, it may not be desirable to heat the external component, for example, when the component may degrade during curing. Furthermore...
