Embodiment 1

[0122] Isolation of Kappa heterocladum (sacol) seaweed into sap and pulp after extracting the sap

[0123] 1 kg of fresh Kappa heterocladum (sacol) seaweed was sourced from the Indonesian island of Makassar and processed through a laboratory centrifugal juicer. Centrifugal juicers have a perforated drum with tines. The whole seaweed comes into contact with the drum and immediately separates into juice and juice-extracted slurry without forming an intermediate slurry. After extracting the juice from seaweed, the slurry and seaweed juice are collected separately from two different outlets of the equipment in a continuous manner. The amount of juice extracted pulp collected was 350 g and the amount of juice collected was 650 g. The water content of the pulp after juice extraction was 80%, and the Brix of the juice was 5%.

Embodiment 2

[0125] Eucheuma seaweed isolated as juice and pulp after juice extraction

[0126] 1 kg of Eucheuma (Spinosum) was obtained from Zanzibar, Tanzania, packed in transparent plastic bags, and exposed to sunlight for 4-10 h. The juice leached from the biomass is collected in bags, leaving the whole algae intact and without forming any slurry. From 1 kg of fresh Spinosum, 800 g of juice-extracted pulp and 200 gm of juice were obtained.

Embodiment 3

[0128] Concentration of seaweed juice (SWJ)

[0129] 150ml of fresh Spinosum seaweed juice (about 4.5Bx) from Example 2 was concentrated to about 30ml using a rotary evaporator maintained under vacuum at 680mm Hg. The evaporating flask was kept at 65°C and the upright condenser was kept at 4°C by circulating water through the cooler. The Brix of the final concentrated juice is 22Bx. In another similar experiment, 1 kg of Kappa longcardia (cottonii) seaweed was separated into juice and slurry by the method in Example 1. 250ml of juice (about 5Bx) was concentrated to a final Bx of 25 in a rotary vacuum evaporator.

[0130] The concentrate juices of both Spinosum and cottonii were subjected to elemental analysis, which showed the following compositions (g / Kg) as shown in Table 1 below.

[0131] Table 1

[0132]

[0133]From the above analysis, it can be seen that regardless of the type of seaweed, potassium is the most abundant element present in the concentrated juice. I...

Abstract

A biostimulant formulation for promoting plant growth, comprising: juice obtained from at least one seaweed species; and hydrolysate obtained from at least one seaweed species pulp, wherein the hydrolysate is obtained from the pulp after juice has been extracted. A method of preparing the biostimulant formulation. A method of contacting the biostimulant formulation with palnt to promote the plantgrowth.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates to the field of plant biology. The present disclosure provides biostimulant formulations obtained from juice and juice extracted pulp of at least one seaweed species for improving plant growth. Background technique [0002] Seaweed-based biostimulants for improving plant growth have long been widely known. Seaweed extracts and suspensions have achieved a wider range of uses and markets than seaweed and seaweed powder. The seaweed species used are generally temperate, growing in cooler waters. Several reviews have covered the use of seaweed extracts for agriculture (Khan et al. J. Plant Growth Regu.l (2009) 28:386-399; Craigie et al. - J Appl Phycol (2011) 23:371-393). [0003] Currently biostimulants are mainly made from brown seaweed, although the species varies between countries. Some are made by alkaline extraction of seaweed, with any insolubles removed by filtration (eg Maxicrop and Seasol). Others are suspensio...
