Abstract

The present invention provides a coating additive (co)polymer comprising, by dry weight, as (co)polymerized units in an amount from 20% to 60%, based on the total dry weight of said (co)polymer, of at least one an acetoacetoxy or acetoacetamide functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and from 40% to 80% of at least one water-soluble ethylenically unsaturated monomer. It further provides a coating formulation comprising greater than 0.04% by dry weight of said acetoacetoxy or acetoacetamide functional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, based on the total dry weight of said coating formulation.

Background technique [0002] Acetoacetoxy- or acetoacetamide-functional monomers such as acetoacetoxyethyl methacrylate (AAEM) are commonly used to prepare self-crosslinking, room-temperature-curing emulsions with good hardness and chemical and blocking resistance copolymer. Once incorporated into the copolymer, the acetoacetoxy functional groups of the AAEM monomers can be cross-linked by "oxidative curing" or reaction with added cross-linking agents such as diamines to produce cured films. Due to similar chemistry, acetoacetoxy functional groups can also be used to react with formaldehyde.
