The method comprises the following steps: acquiring original spectrum data, wherein the original spectrum data comprises water quality spectrum data of each water quality sample and a real total nitrogen content value of each water quality sample, and the water quality spectrum data of each water quality sample represents the absorbancy of each water quality sample within a preset wavelength range; by using an uninformative variable elimination method and a continuous projection algorithm, screening the original spectrum data so as to obtain spectrum characteristic data; by using a least squares support vector machine, modeling the spectrum characteristic data so as toobtain a detection model, and by using a detection model, acquiring a total nitrogen content detection value of a water quality sample to be detected.
