Problems solved by technology

These filters can clog quickly as the filtration mechanism deposits material on the surface of the filter
Additionally, filtration of biological materials such as blood may result in the material being dissolved as it is filtered through a dead-end filter

Embodiment Construction

[0023] The disclosed embodiments generally relate to systems and methods for filtering materials from biological fluids of human or animal subjects. In certain embodiments, a tangential flow filter may be used to separate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) into a permeate and a retentate. The permeate can be returned to the subject. In certain embodiments, the retentate can be filtered again, for example, through one or more additional tangential flow filters or through a different filtration method. During operation of the system, various parameters such as flow rate and pressure can be modified. Certain systems and methods described herein can be combined with other systems and methods for conditioning, removing or otherwise treating biological material, such as those discussed in US Patent No. 8,435,204, which is incorporated herein by reference.

Abstract

This disclosure discusses systems and methods for filtering materials from biological fluids. Embodiments may be used to filter cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of a human or animal subject. The method may comprise the steps of withdrawing fluid comprising CSF, filtering the volume into permeate and retentate by passing the fluid through a tangential flow filter, and returning the permeate to the subject. During operation of the system, various parameters, such as flow rate, can be adjusted.
