Embodiment Construction

[0018] As shown in the figure, in figure 1 In , a system 20 for treating a patient 22 is shown. System 20 is shown in a surgical setting, such as an operating room of a medical facility. In the illustrated embodiment, system 20 includes a processing station 24 and a guiding station 26 . Guidance station 26 is configured to track the movement of various objects in the operating room. Such objects include, for example, the surgical instrument 30, the patient's femur F, and the patient's tibia T. Guidance station 26 tracks these objects in order to display their relative positions and orientations to the user, and in some cases to control or limit movement of surgical instrument 30 relative to the target site. Surgical instrument 30 is shown as part of processing station 24 . However, in other embodiments, surgical instrument 30 is held and moved manually by a user.

[0019] The target site to be treated by the surgical instrument 30 is defined by the virtual object. In the...

Abstract

A system and method for performing surgery at a target site defined by virtual objects. The surgical navigation system includes a patient tracker (54, 56) to be attached to the patient. A locator (44) cooperates with the patient tracker and generates locator data associated with the target site during the procedure. The surgical navigation system also includes a vision device (72) for generating image data associated with the target site and surfaces surrounding the target site. A navigation computer in communication with the locator and the vision device is configured to determine areas to avoid outside of the target site based on the locator data and the image data. In some cases, the second virtual object is generated to define an area to avoid such that surgical instruments used during the procedure avoid the area.

Description

[0001] related applications [0002] This application claims priority and benefit to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 273,543, filed December 31, 2015, the entire content and disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference. technical field [0003] The present disclosure generally relates to systems and methods for operating on a patient at a target site defined by virtual objects. Background technique [0004] Navigation systems help users pinpoint objects. For example, navigation systems are used in industrial, aerospace and medical applications. In the medical field, navigation systems help surgeons precisely place surgical instruments relative to target sites in a patient. The target site usually requires some form of treatment, such as removal of tissue. In some cases, virtual objects (such as 3D models) are used to define the target site in the navigation system. A representation of the virtual object may be displayed to the user during the proced...
