Problems solved by technology

Although there are examples of blends exhibiting specified characteristics relative to laser welding, these solutions remain unsatisfactory - not only due to the material's inherent low laser transparency, but also due to the difficulty in manufacturing / producing the material. Controls the consistency of this property

Abstract

The invention is directed to a thermoplastic resin composition comprising: from 10 to 80 weight percent of a partially crystalline polyester component selected from the group consisting of terephthalate-derived polyesters, naphthalate-derived polyesters, succinate-derived polyesters, and furanoate-derived polyesters; or combinations thereof; from 1.5 to 40 weight percent of an amorphous high heat copolyester resin component that is produced by polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising a mixture of spiroglycol, ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid and or an ester thereof (SPG PET) and havinga glass transition temperature (Tg) of 85 to 130DEG C; and from 0.01 to 5 weight percent of an antioxidant, mold release agent, stabilizer, or a combination thereof.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to glass-filled semi-crystalline polymer compositions comprising spirodiol-modified poly(ethylene terephthalate) (SPG PET) copolyester resins. These compositions have increased transparency to NIR laser light without significantly compromising mechanical and thermal properties. Materials with such a high NIR transmission offer processing advantages, especially short cycle times. Due to the improved clarity and transparency of the glass-filled blends, excellent surface aesthetics, depth of color and visual special effects are possible with the present invention. The present invention is also directed to a method for welding a first article comprising a laser-transmissive resin composition as described herein and a laser-absorbing thermoplastic article. The laser welded product of the present invention is obtainable by applying laser radiation to the first article in physical contact with at least a portion of the surface of...
