Abstract

Multi-beam diffraction grating based backlights, electronic displays, multi-view displays and methods of multi-view display operation are provided. A multi-beam diffraction grating-based backlighting includes a light guide and a multi-beam diffraction grating on the surface of the light guide. The light guide is used to guide the light from the light source. A multi-beam diffraction grating couples out a portion of the guided light using diffractive coupling, and directs the outcoupled portion out of the light guide as multiple beams with different principal axis directions.
