Embodiment Construction

[0077] refer to figure 2 , the wave actuated system 50 converts and uses wave energy to desalinate water through reverse osmosis. As can be seen, the system 50 is divided into three subsystems: a reverse osmosis (RO) desalination subsystem 52 , a wave energy converter (WEC) subsystem 54 , and a pre-filter subsystem 56 . Various implementations of each of these subsystems are described in more detail below.

[0078] In the system 50, wave energy is converted during one phase of the wave cycle (eg upward lift for point absorbers).

[0079] The WEC subsystem 54 has a float 58 connected to a one-way hydraulic cylinder 60 to transmit wave force to the hydraulic cylinder 60 . A hydraulic cylinder 60 is also attached to a reaction member, which in this embodiment is a drag plate 62 . The carriage 62 resists movement while the buoy 58 floats up and down on the waves. As will be described in more detail below, the relative movement between the float 58 and the carriage 62 produces...

Abstract

A wave-actuated system for desalination of water by reverse osmosis (RO) having a wave energy converter (WEC) subsystem and a RO desalination subsystem is disclosed. The WEC subsystem has a float, a reaction member, and a hydraulic cylinder connected between the float and the reaction member and defining first and second variable volume chambers The RO desalination subsystem has a RO cell containing a RO membrane and a flow smoothing device (FSD). During a first stroke of the WEC subsystem: the float moves in a first direction; and seawater is supplied from the first variable volume chamber tothe RO cell and to the FSD. During a second stroke of the WEC subsystem: the float moves in a second direction; seawater is supplied from a seawater intake to the first variable volume chamber; and seawater is supplied from the FSD to the RO cell.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 348,431, filed June 10, 2016, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein by reference. technical field [0003] The technology relates to systems and methods for desalination of water by reverse osmosis. More specifically, the present technology provides systems and methods for desalination of water by reverse osmosis using energy converted from ocean waves. Background technique [0004] Desalination of seawater can be achieved in a number of ways. Reverse Osmosis (RO) has grown in popularity since the 1970s and is now more common. The treatment works by pumping seawater under high pressure inside a semi-permeable membrane. When the pressure is higher than the osmotic pressure of the fluid, desalinated water is produced. [0005] figure 1 A RO system 10 commonly used in the desalination industry is shown schematically. It can...
