Disclosed is an integrated handheld computer and telephony system. Integration of the handheld computer and telephony system is at the physical and operational level. For example, the integrated handheld computer and telephony system physically integrates a handheld computer with a mobile (e.g., cellular) telephone. In addition, the handheld computer is distinct from telephony system in that they are logically separable. However, they are also operationally integrated, for example, the telephony system executes a telephone application on the processor of the handheld computer. Likewise, the handheld computer can execute applications, for example, a phone book, that can be used to launch the telephony application.

Information associated with messages and/or missed calls is provided to a subscriber. Calls received but not answered by the subscriber may be monitored. Each monitored call is classified as one of a missed call and a message. The monitored calls may be summarized based on a customizable rule set to create a summary. Systems and methods for caller id authentication, spoof detection and list based call handling are disclosed. The caller ID authentication is performed by an authentication device connected to the calling party telephone transmitting the source and destination telephone numbers of the call to an authentication server. The called party authentication device extracts the caller ID of the incoming call and transmits the caller ID of the caller and the telephone number of the called party to the authentication server. The authentication server analyzes the transmitted information from both devices and replies with the authentication status of the caller ID to the called party authentication device. Other embodiments are disclosed where the authentication server is not available and caller ID authentication is performed in a peer-to-peer manner. In another embodiment, the concepts of active and passive certification passwords are used to maintain the integrity of the system. Other embodiments allow for authenticating blocked caller ID's, reveling blocked caller ID's, VoIP implementations, legitimate caller ID spoofing, and placing a blocked caller ID on private white or black lists. Another embodiment combines the described caller ID authentication system within a call handling system utilizing internal, global and private white and black lists. Applications of caller ID authentication methodology to other forms of communication source address authentication, such as email, SMS, and postal mail are envisioned.

Systems and methods for providing visual information to a telephone user regarding multiple voicemail services associated with the telephone user. The method includes providing a telephone comprising a display and organizing information relating to messages in the voicemail, wherein the information comprises an identifier indicating with which voicemail service each message is associated. Finally, the information is displayed on the display. Additional information may include the number of messages, a primary phone number from which each message was received, a name associated with each primary phone number, at least one alternative phone number associated with each primary phone number and a length of time for each message.
