Media delivery platform

An improved method for delivery and play back of sound and image files is provided. This new method includes the use of sound and/or image clips, which can be snippets or full files, as alerts for a variety of electronic devices or for playing on a handheld device, and for use as a promotion to sell items associated with the files. A collection or library of uniquely selected and/or edited clips may also be provided to the consumer in a manner far more conveniently on conventional telephone equipment than previously available. Algorithms are provided for the delivery, storage and playback of the sound files, including a delivery method algorithm (500), a parametric optimization and compression algorithm (1500), and an error correction algorithm. In contrast to the conventional ring tones or musical chimes used to ring cellular phones currently on the market, the current invention provides a method for ringing cellular phones and landline telephones with real sound recordings including real music, which may be songs lifted from copyright registered CD tracks, and may comprise human voice, various instrument sounds, and other sound effects of a high quality. A software based system for encoding the hardware of existing cellular phones at the time of manufacturing with delivery, storage, and playback capabilities in accordance with the present invention is provided, such that additional hardware is not required.

Portable high speed internet access device with encryption

The invention discloses a portable remote device that allows the user to access the Internet and World Wide Web. The portable device connects to a cellular telephone, thus providing wireless connection to the internet via a host computer which runs a browser, that takes information received from the Internet or other sources and renders it onto a virtual display in its memory. This information is directed to software, which reduces the color depth of the information to a lower depth color image. This reduced image is then compressed and encrypted by another software and sent to the portable device of the invention, which decrypts and decompresses it for displaying to the user. The browser may also reduces the color depth and compress the image without need for further software. Thus, the user views a bit map or raster image of a Web page, which is stored into memory. The portable device further comprises methods of pointing and clicking on text and images which represent links to other pages. Web pages with links may also be sent to the portable device, which stores them into memory to facilitate off-line viewing from the memory of the device. The user may also select desired links to each web page. Email messages may be retrieved manually or automatically at programmed times. Video frames and sound files may also be displayed on the portable device, with the aid of a buffer memory to facilitate uninterrupted playback.

Searching and sorting media clips having associated style and attributes

A style identifier is associated with each of a plurality of media clips stored in a database, based on a subjective evaluation of various characteristics of each media clip by an expert. The style represented by the style identifier corresponds to an impression on the expert regarding various qualities of the media clip and is not constrained by the subject of the media clip. Media clips with which style identifiers are associated can be any form of digital media, such as clip art files, sound files, photographs, animation files, fonts, etc. Also associated with each media clip in the database is an absolute ranking value for each of a plurality of different attributes based on a subjective evaluation of each media clip by an expert. A user can search the database for media clips associated with a specific style identifier and can sort the media clips that were identified by a search, based upon the absolute ranking value for a selected attribute. In one application of this invention, the database is maintained at a web site accessible over the Internet, and users can browse or search the database based upon a selected category, a keyword, or a style. The results of browsing or searching the database can be selectively sorted in regard to a selected attribute. Thus, with this invention, a user can more readily identify an appropriate media clip that is suitable for an intended use.

Sampling playback doorbell system

A digital sampling playback doorbell system has two or more doorbell buttons and a central unit with solid state memory storage for multiple digitally sampled sound files. User assignment means are provided for assigning a particular sound file to a particular doorbell button. The digital sampling playback doorbell has computer interface of RS-232, or USB, or infrared wireless connection type and relies on computer installed software to download digitally sampled sound files stored in the computer hard drive to the memory of the digital sampling playback doorbell system central unit. The digitally sampled sound files stored in the computer hard drive are obtained by accessing a web site through the Internet or capturing sound through an audio computer connection to a microphone, CD player, radio broadcast or mass music storage device using software resident in the computer. Alternatively, an IPOD can be used as a source for sounds that can be transferred or sent to play on the doorbell. Such sound transfer can take place via a blue tooth communication link, or by a docking station that resides on the doorbell. Taking advantage of the intelligence contained within the IPOD, one can then select sounds or files that have been previously converted by either the IPOD or the computer that the IPOD was previously attached to, and send them to the doorbell.
