The method comprises the steps of acquiring hyperspectral images of the detected insulators, extracting the hyperspectral images of the insulators with different contamination levels, and building a contamination level recognition model; and carrying out recognition byusing the model to detect the contamination level, processing the obtained hyperspectral images to obtain the distribution position and scope of the contamination on the surface of an umbrella skirt,and finally achieving visual non-contact detection for the contamination distribution on the surface of the umbrella skirt. The visual detection method is convenient to operate, and the flashover voltage is reduced under a certain humidity condition when the umbrella skirt of the insulator is high in contamination level, thereby being applicable to live detection on site, providing a basis for cleaning insulators in a targeted manner, and meeting the requirements of transmission line insulator detection in China.
