Problems solved by technology

Without coordination and radio resource management, arbitrary use of radio spectrum across multiple cells leads to inter-cell interference and QoS degradation
However, classic inter-cell interference schemes such as ICIC, eICIC, and FeICIC are not suitable for industrial automation applications due to the strict delay constraints and high reliability of the communication requirements

Abstract

A technique for allocating radio resources in a radio access network for operating a plurality of devices is described, in particular for industrial automation applications. As to a method aspect of the technique, a need for radio resources for each of a plurality of second radio coordinators for assigning the radio resources to an associated device group is determined by a first radio coordinator. The plurality of devices are grouped into a plurality of device groups, each device group being associated to one of the second radio coordinators. Further, the radio resources to each of the plurality of second radio coordinators are allocated by the first radio coordinator based on the determined need for radio resources and an allocation message is sent to at least one of the plurality of second radio coordinators by the first radio coordinator, the allocation message being indicative of the allocated radio resources. According to a further method aspect of the technique, an allocation message from the first radio coordinator is received by a second resource coordinator and radio resources to the devices of its associated device group are assigned by the second radio coordinator basedon the radio resources allocated to said second radio coordinator according to the received allocation message.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to a technique for allocating radio resources in a radio access network. More particularly, but not limited to, methods and apparatus for allocating and assigning radio resources in a radio access network, in particular for industrial automation applications, are provided. Background technique [0002] A key goal of 5G, the next-generation cellular network standard, is to support very high-reliability and low-latency machine-type communications, known as critical MTC or ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC). Industrial automation applications, also known as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT), require highly reliable communications with extremely low latency ranges. Industrial automation and control often involves sensors reporting data to a programmable logic controller (PLC). A PLC instructs an actuator, such as a robot, to perform a specific action based on sensed data. [0003] Today's in...
