Embodiment Construction

[0012] This instruction relates to stopping an internal combustion engine. During conditions of low driver demand torque, the engine may initially stop burning fuel. The engine may continue to not burn fuel by requesting to stop the engine from spinning prior to opening the torque converter clutch in response to low vehicle speed. Therefore, the engine may not be restarted until the vehicle comes to a complete stop, thereby reducing the amount of fuel the engine may consume. The engine may be restarted after a vehicle stop or in response to an increase in driver demand torque. engine can be figure 1 type shown in . Alternatively, the engine may be a diesel engine. The engine can be included in figure 2 in the drivetrain or driveline shown. image 3 An exemplary engine shutdown routine is shown. The engine can be based on Figure 4 Shown method to stop.

Abstract

The invention relates to methods and system for stopping an engine of a hybrid vehicle. A method and system for operating a vehicle that includes an automatic transmission with a torque converter clutch is described. In one example, the method includes predicting a time that the torque converter clutch will open so that stopping rotation of the engine may be requested before the torque converter clutch is opened. The stopping rotation of the engine is requested to conserve fuel.

Description

technical field [0001] The present description relates to methods and systems for stopping a vehicle engine. The method and system may extend the cutoff of fuel to the engine during engine shutdown procedures to conserve fuel. Background technique [0002] The vehicle may include an internal combustion engine that enters a fuel cut mode when the vehicle is on the road and the driver demand torque is low. Fuel cut mode reduces fuel consumption and engine emissions. Therefore, it may be desirable to remain in fuel cut mode for as long as possible. However, staying in fuel cut mode can be challenging for vehicles that include an automatic transmission because the automatic transmission may not deliver enough torque to spin the engine when the torque converter is unlocked. Thus, when the torque converter must be turned on to improve vehicle handling, the engine can be refueled before the vehicle speed becomes low, and then the engine can be stopped after the vehicle speed rea...
