[0024] The maximum number of emitted beams that can be coupled into a given fiber is typically ultimately determined by the beam parameter product (BPP) of the single-emitter diode laser used to generate the corresponding laser beam. However, in order to maximize the available brightness of the emitted beam, it is also important to optically and physically efficiently arrange the laser diodes to fill the available numerical aperture of the fiber into which the beam is coupled. For example, one problem that hinders maintaining the brightness of a single emitter is the generally rectangular beam shape in both physical and angular space and a mismatch with the circular space of the fiber. Therefore, in the representative example herein, the circular space of the output fiber is filled by beam shaping the diode laser beam, allowing more single-emitter beams to be coupled into the same fiber, so that an increase in brightness can be achieved.
