Embodiment Construction

[0062] In certain embodiments, the present invention relates to a fluid heating system for heating and / or thermal pasteurization of water. In particular, the fluid heating system may include an elongated parabolic mirror for focusing sunlight on a focal point or focal axis. The fluid heating tube may be arranged along the mirror and along the focal axis of the mirror. Water can be controllably passed through the heating tube at a calibrated rate depending on time and temperature to inactivate pathogens and produce potable water. Fluid flow can be controlled by a thermally actuated valve, which is specially adapted to control pulsed flow and prevent contaminated water from passing through the valve. Still further, the system may include a unique sun tracking system that allows tracking of the sun or other tracking processes with very low power consumption and high accuracy.

[0063] The systems, devices, and mechanisms described herein may allow for the heating and / or thermal...

Abstract

A method of controlling a fluid heating system having a solar collector that focuses sunlight on a focal axis, an elongated flow element that heats and transports liquid water along the solar collector at the focal axis in a stationary configuration with the solar collector, a flow control assembly that controls the flow of liquid water in the elongated flow element, controlling heating of liquid water below a boiling temperature and establishing a liquid water mass flow rate, the method comprising: obtaining a desired liquid water pathogen reduction in the system at a flow control component; effecting a series of time-varying temperatures of the liquid water at the flow control assembly at the distal end of the elongate flow element; calculating the amount of pathogen reduction at the flow control component using a decimal reduction model that accumulates the amount of pathogen reduction resulting from each temperature in the series and the amount of time the liquid water is at each temperature; the mass flow rate of liquid water through the flow control assembly is controlled using the pathogen reduction, providing a desired pathogen reduction.
